PICO Laser Treatment

Fast, safe, and non-invasive. PICO Lasers can safely and effectively treat acne scars, skin discoloration, effects of aging, skin imperfections, unwanted tattoos, and pigmentation. Read on to learn more about why PICO Lasers are the talk of the town.

What Is A PICO Laser?

A PICO Laser machine uses a picosecond laser, which simply means that this particular type of laser has a shorter pulse duration of one picosecond, which is one trillionth of a second, as compared to Q-switched lasers, which use nanosecond pulses.

What Is Pulse Duration, And Why Does It Matter?

Rather than just emitting one continuous beam of light energy via a laser, and possibly resulting in burning and scarring, both PICO Lasers emit extremely short pulses of light energy.

The laser energy is delivered in pulses, and not continuously, to prevent heat damage to our skin tissue. Think of it as a laser machine gun with ultra-quick shots being fired onto your skin.

The pulse duration refers to the time a device takes to deliver energy to a treatment area, OR the time in which targeted tissue (your skin) is exposed to laser energy. Lasers with ultra-short pulse duration are considered to be safer because they only react to the targeted tissue, reducing the risks of collateral heat damage to the surrounding tissues. For PICO Lasers, the pulse duration is measured in picoseconds, which is one trillionth of a second.

By firing the lasers in shorter pulse durations, the PICO Laser is able to deliver higher energy, with less heat being absorbed by the surrounding tissue, causing less damage to areas that are not targeted by the PICO Laser.

PICO Lasers vs Q-Switched Lasers

Both Pico Lasers and Q-switch lasers were developed to address skin issues such as pigmentation, fine lines, acne, acne scars and tattoo removal, and both operate similarly by delivering short pulses of laser to targeted problem areas of your skin, such as pigmentation, and tattoos.

The key difference between the two is the “pulse duration”. Remember the “laser machine gun” we explained earlier? When it comes to “shooting” pulses of laser, the PICO laser is able to shoot about 100x faster pulses than a Q-Switched laser.

Benefits Of PICO Lasers Over Q-Switched Lasers

  • Lesser treatments needed for more stubborn pigmentation

  • More power delivered, with less heat, safer as the surrounding tissue is not heated as much as Q-Switched lasers

  • Minimal discomfort during the treatment

  • Reduced risk of post treatment hyperpigmentation

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At Acclaro clinic, we use the PicoSure machine, which is the world’s first picosecond laser that was developed for a wide range of aesthetic applications such as tattoo removal, acne scar treatment, and pigmentation removal, as well as treating of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Melasma is one of the most difficult pigmentations to treat. Laser treatment alone is most often not enough to treat melasma effectively. However, there have been studies that show an effective reduction of melasma when exposed to PICO Lasers with a combination of topical creams and medications, and PICO Lasers achieved a faster and better clearance rate for melasma as compared to Q-Switched Lasers.

  • PICO Laser treatments demand minimal or no downtime. You can resume your daily activities almost immediately. Some may experience swelling or redness, but these should subside within a few hours.

  • Some may experience redness and swelling, but this generally subsides within a few hours. Patients can usually go about their day immediately. Pico laser treatments are not painful. You may experience some slight, temporary discomfort, but nothing like surgical or invasive treatments.

You’ll notice that your skin texture will be healthier and more colourful.

The benefits of the treatment will surface gradually as your body’s natural healing process kicks in. Most patients notice improvements within the first 2 or 3 weeks following their initial session. Your outcomes will improve until your last session or you have attained the desired result.
